Bloggers Have to Set Goals, Right?

boy a goal and a blog

I wanted to talk about this for a little while, but didn’t know how I would present the topic. Everyone has written about setting goals for your blog. You know, you can blog for a number of subscribers, until you make this much money, or make a goal to post every day. They say a blog without goals is no better than a dead blog. These topics have all been covered to death, though.

What is it that provokes us to need goals? Do we really need goals? Why? What the hell is the point of a goal? Why can’t I blog without them?

Do bloggers really need goals to be successful? I don’t know. Personally, I’ve never met one that hadn’t not had any. I guess a blogger feels the need to be pushed by something. Their love for their niche and writing not being enough, they put up a measurable point to track their progress. I’m guessing it’s a lack of personal motivation, a lack of wanting to do anything without being rewarded by other people. Ah ha, I think I’m getting somewhere.

So, what bloggers really need goals? A greedy one! One who seeks attention. One that isn’t satisfied with a blog just portraying themselves. A blogger sets a goal so he can reach it, and feel rewarded by reaching it in case he is not rewarded enough by his fellow bloggers and subscribers, pending he has any. People are driven by reward and money and shiny things and comments. If others won’t provide these things for us, we can provide them for ourselves, and we bloggers like to do that.

God, I feel so icky and greedy and slimy now. I have goals, and if I didn’t apply these terms to me I would only be a hypocrite. What else can I call these? I think I will now call my goals “points of measurement.” Of course it is pretty hard to do this because goals usually have some kind of time frame and a point that you reach. In essence a goal is just a point of measurement. So I’m really not making anything new, damn’t. I’m stumped now. If you can’t tell by now, this post is more than a rant. Sorry to any subscribers if you feel there is no real basis to this post.

I’m starting to realize it probably is impossible to blog without any really point to strive for. We strive for personal satisfaction and thought. We want communal acceptance. Goals give us lead way to take this. Some personal bloggers may say, “I blog because I love writing and sharing my life with others. I don’t have any goals when I’m writing. Whether or not anyone actually reads my blog or not, I just do it for myself.” You just told me you want the community to accept you, and you blog for personal satisfaction. While hard to measure concretely, like the definition of a proper goal would enlist, you none the less are creating a point of measure for you to achieve. And with every post you want to keep achieving that.

I think I realize it is now impossible to blog without goals. It is impossible to live life without goals! I am hungry. I want to eat. A goal has just been made. When I eat, my goal is successfully obtained. Odd, right, but I think I am right here. I don’t know. This was a bad post, and I will probably see a drop in subscribers, but let’s hope for my goal’s sake, that I don’t. Help me out with this, subscribers. Drop a comment about what you think about goals.

Goals are definitely important in blogging. If you don’t set yourself some goals, it is too easy to look at stats dropping, get disillusioned and quit.

If you set yourself goals, proper goals, you make yourself more accountable to yourself and your readers (if you post your goals).

    Just my 2c :)
