4 Ways to Becoming an RSS Ninja

blogosis_rss_button 4 Ways to Becoming an RSS Ninja

A successful blogger, in the minds of others, is usually one that is making a lot of money and has a lot of subscribers. Now, I’m not here to show you how to make the money, but I know some sneaky tactics that will get you readers. I’m a bit of a subscriber ninja, I guess.

Honestly, you best shot at getting any subscribers is to write original content on your blog and hope they know what RSS is. If they don’t, you may want to write up a little story on that button of yours. Maybe I have some readers that didn’t know what it meant to subscribe. Well, you see RSS apprentice subscriber, you see that big orange button with the dot and 2 curved bars? Click it, and you will get automatic updates from this blog in an RSS aggregator or bookmark bar. I suggest you use Google Reader.

Put pictures in your blogs and link them to your RSS feed. Oh, how unethical this is! Ha-ha. Maybe make them small unidentifiable images so people think they can blow them up. But then, bam! You have now subscribed. I do this in a lot of my blog posts, so I’m sorry if I got you that way, but hey! You are reading now so you must enjoy it, right?

Link to your RSS feed everywhere. I have a link on my sidebar, on the header, in blog entries and there is one at the footer, too. You just need to get the word out that you can subscribe, so advertise it!

Make your RSS symbol clear! Look at my RSS symbol. Not only is it the coolest RSS graphic out there, it is huge. People will know when they click that button they will be subscribed. It is written above it that this is the way to subscribe. If you are going to add a little chicklet as your subscriber button you will have to try better than that. I have given up on sites where I just couldn’t find the subscribe button.

Those are my tips on getting people to click your subscriber button. These things won’t fool normal blog readers, but for the thousands of new people getting online daily this may work for them. Sure it’s a little unethical; sure it’s a bit sneaky and under the table, but if you don’t care go for it. Get that blog subscriber number up!

Now there is one thing I did not know, what do you mean when they clicked on the image leading to the rss feed they are subscribed?

Sigh. I definitely need to work on rss feed promotion on ALL of my sites. Thanks for the tips!

Lol, you better make this text “Link to your RSS feed everywhere” strong… otherwise it looks like you only have 3 tips :)

I can only speak for myself, but I’m using Opera, so whether there’s a feed link or how it looks doesn’t matter since I always have a feed button in my address field. What does matter is that the site should have correct link tags so I don’t have to find another feed link. (Only as little as 10% according to my visitor tracking system, for my site)
So, not everybody is using Opera, so I should actually consider adding a better feed button to my own site! Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, I don’t think many people use Opera, not comparable to Firefox or IE at least. Definitely make your RSS button noticeable.

So so! I just added a bigger feed button. What thinks? Maybe it melts in too much with the background? I think it looks ok at least.

Woah man! Thats huge. Glad to see someone taking my tips to practice! I think if your drop it down about another half inch it would be even more effective though. Otherwise, Great!
