6 Ways to Make Your Blog as Big as Cloverfield

cloverfield-poster-thumb.jpg

Cloverfield was advertised like no other movie. After the first showing of its trailer before the start of the largest movie of last year (Transformers), people were guessing what the hell this movie was. In the end it is a classic monster movie with spins and twists here and there, and one that ranks well in this blogger’s mind. Being the odd mind that I am, I was able to draw some ideas from Cloverfield that you may want to incorporate into your blog. If you haven’t seen Cloverfield, don’t read on until you have. The post contains spoilers.

  • Market your blog virally. The marketing scheme for this movie was absolutely amazing. There were puzzle games set up, and websites that seemed like they had nothing to do with anything were linked to the film. It made people talk. This is the kind of stuff that gets Dugg. Find a way to market your blog that is away from the ordinary. Keep secrets and release them slowly. This is commonly seen already, though. “I can show you how to make $1000 dollars in 2 days…”

  • Deliver promises. The producer of Cloverfield, J.J. Abrams, saw an old poster from the movie ‘Escape from New York. In that poster, the head of the statue of liberty had been beheaded and was seen lying in a rubble-filled New York City street. The movie failed to actually manifest this image. Abrams took this idea, put it on Cloverfield’s poster, and brought that to life in the movie. If you promise your readers something on your blog, give it to them. I almost didn’t write this blog post, but then I remembered I told you I would in an old post. I also promise to pay up for my contest.
  • Explore the unknown. The characters in Cloverfield explored the city, rather than attempt to flee like the other millions. They went to go expose a certain truth, and in the end, they got what they were looking for (the girl). Sure, some got hurt along the way, but they got there. Try doing something like that while blogging. Explore unknown or previously unmentioned topics. Search for new truths. It may knock you down, but many times it will lead to new opportunities.
  • Set goals. Once again, they were searching for that girl. It became a goal of theirs. Set goals to allow you to keep pushing yourself towards something. Motivation is a key requirement for any successful blogger.
  • Take a new perspective on things. Cloverfield was all shot at the characters point of view with a Handycam video camera. While it was a bit shaky, and left my girlfriend wanting to vomit, it was none the less an interesting take. Take your blog subscribers on a ‘similar’ ride. Blog from a point of view that hasn’t been written yet. Disagree, expose the truth, or argue. Be original in your blog content, because no one needs to know how much you agree with all of John Chow’s restaurant reviews.
  • Drop hints for future occurences. I don’t want to spoil to much, but there may be a Cloverfield sequal. If you are really interested, go to Youtube and search for “Cloverfield ending.” If you didn’t sit through the credits you may have missed something. Anyways, it sets up for continuation. Set your blog up like that. Let your readers know what they will get later on down the week. Plan out your blogging and let your subscribers know a little about it.
  • Help your friends out. Bloggers need support, especially us little guys. Give smaller blogs a push, fight back with them. The characters in Cloverfield stuck together throughout the film… until they died at least, and oh my god! Did they ever die! Haha. You probably won’t have to worry about the death part, but struggle is always easier when you have more people on your side. Get your subscribers to support your blogs, get readers to comment, and use them to promote your blog. Do the same for them to gain more support.

Oh, my head. It hurts. This was not an easy post, but a really fun one. I think I incorporated all my ideas from this post into the post. I attempted to get some response to this blog from a comment I posted in another entry (who says all marketing works? I said “attempted.” :p). I am delivering this blog entry which I promised. It is an unexplored topic in the blogging niche. I set goals to publish this post, and it fulfils my goal of ‘posting at least 1 blog entry a day.’ It is a perspective I have never seen taken for any blogging blog (I guess this is kind of similar to the point two before this one). I will set you up and let you know my next blog will be about my goals for the year. Happy? Check back then. :)

Oh, seems I forgot to help you guys out. Why don’t you help yourselves? What did you think about this post? See anymore links between blogging and Cloverfield? Leave a comment. I added the plug-in CommentLuv which gives you a back-link to your blog. I am so nice!

There are some great ideas here! One good viral tactic is a contest or giveaway. If you really shop around you can find a company to donote the prize since they too will benefit from the exposure.

If you liked Cloverfield, you might like the recent Korean Blockbuster The Host. It’s pretty incredible.

Yeah, I saw The Host way back when it hit Asian theatres (released in Thailand way before it got to America). Fun movie, but still really puzzling.\
